How do you find the causes behind 80% of a problem?
| Intagya ERP
Work out each cause's weight by multiplying impact by frequency, rank them from largest to smallest and add up their shares. The causes up to the 80% line are your priorities. The Pareto chart in Intagya ERP shows this order automatically and recalculates it when you filter by source.
You have ten causes of late delivery and time for three. Most teams start with the easiest, then find a month later that the figure has not moved.
What is the 80/20 rule in daily work?
A few causes usually make most of the effect. The ratio is no exact law, and yours may be 70/30. The useful idea is the order: do not treat all causes the same.
How is a cause's weight calculated?
Impact times frequency. A cause that happens 14 times at impact 5 weighs 70, and one that happens twice at impact 2 weighs 4. The first deserves your time, even if the second is easier.
How do I read a Pareto chart?
The bars run from largest to smallest and the line adds up the shares. The causes up to the 80% line are your priorities. With ten causes weighing 70, 48, 36, 20, 15, 12, 10, 10, 9 and 4, the first five are enough to cross the line.
When does this ranking mislead you?
When the data is incomplete. If half the moves are recorded as Other, the chart only describes what was recorded. So we show a data completeness figure and put unclassified moves in a clear queue. Finish the queue before a big decision.
FAQ
Do I always start with the biggest cause?
Usually yes, unless it is out of your control, like a market change. Then start with the biggest cause you can affect.
Who sets the impact score?
When a cost is known the system suggests 1 to 5, and you can edit it. Your edit stays after every refresh.
Does the order change when I filter?
Yes. Showing only system causes or only manual causes recalculates the order and the shares.
