How can stock moves tell you why returns went up?

Record the reason for each return from a short list when you validate it, then group moves by reason. Every return that enters your warehouse carries a piece of information, and most companies let it go: the item is received, the quantity is adjusted, and that is the end. Three months later the manager asks why and finds only the storekeeper's memory.
Why is the return rate alone not enough?
The rate only tells you the size of the problem. 5% from shipping damage needs a very different fix from 5% from picking errors.
What is the simplest way to record the reason for each return?
A short list at the moment of validation, not a long form. In Intagya ERP you pick the reason with one click, and if you pick Other you write a note. You can turn this request on or off in the Inventory settings.
What do I do with old returns that have no reason?
Do not leave them out of the count. They appear in the queue of moves recorded as Other, you classify them one at a time, and the analysis updates after each click.
How do returns turn into a decision?
The rate compares returns from customers with deliveries, moves are grouped by reason, and each reason shows its frequency, its estimated cost at product cost and its change on the last period. Then you approve an action with an owner and a deadline.

Do returns to suppliers count in the rate?
No. The rate covers what comes back from customers.
Is the cost shown an accounting figure?
It is an estimate at the product's current cost, not an accounting entry.
Does switching it on change warehouse work?
A reason window appears when a return is validated, and the option is off by default. Point of sale is not affected.
